This study analyzes the impacts of Korea’s Aid for Trade to ASEAN on the
bilateral trade relations with a fixed-effects model from 2006 to 2019. The
empirical results suggest that Korea’s AfT disbursements to ASEAN promote the
export between the donor and the recipients while the magnitude of the impacts
on ASEAN’s exports is much greater. It implies the bilateral AfT is conducive to
both the donor and the recipients and the latter can benefit more from the aid.
Furthermore, the analysis also indicates the disaggregated impacts of the AfT
subcategories. While only aid for economic infrastructure holds significant and
positive impacts on Korea’s export to ASEAN, both the aid directed to economic
infrastructure and to trade policy and regulation significantly and positively
lead to an increase in ASEAN’s exports to Korea.
